Vegetable disease detection

In 2022, Guru Technology, in collaboration with Kathmandu University, Nepal, developed and implemented a groundbreaking project titled “Deep Learning-Based Vegetable Plant Disease Identification” as part of a community development initiative. This initiative was designed to address the critical challenges faced by millions of farmers in Nepal, who struggle with crop diseases caused by worms, insects, and environmental factors. Limited access to expert guidance often leaves farmers without effective solutions, leading to significant agricultural losses. To tackle this issue, we developed a mobile application powered by advanced deep learning technology, enabling farmers to identify crop diseases effortlessly and access corresponding solutions in real time.

Our team implemented state-of-the-art neural network object detection models, meticulously trained on a diverse dataset of disease categories and their infected locations. The application, built using Python, PyTorch, Kotlin, and MongoDB, offers an intuitive interface, allowing farmers to capture images of infected crops with their mobile devices. The app instantly diagnoses the disease and provides actionable recommendations, ensuring a user-friendly, automated, and cost-free solution for farmers. By deploying this technology, we not only empowered farmers to combat crop diseases but also contributed to improving agricultural productivity and fostering sustainable farming practices. The results of this project are documented in our publication on arXiv, showcasing its transformative potential in enhancing Nepal’s agricultural sector.
